How to get involved in community service
60Youth-GET INVOLVED.
So, you are a teenager, or perhaps an adult, and you want to get involved in the community and eventually the world. Your heart is yearning to help those around you. BUT you don't know where to start and how to get involved!! Read this and you will get some great ideas...
1) START AT SCHOOL: Most public and private High Schools have clubs that meet and do community service projects. It may not be the coolest thing to do, or it may cut into your social life, but it will make you feel better & looks great on college applications!!
2) THE COMMUNITY: Is there a local church or temple? Go to the ministers or Rabbi's, and seek advise. Religion is often involved in some type of giving back to the people.
3) THE KIDS: Maybe there are kids younger than you that go to a local YMCA or Boys & Girl Club, go to the club and start holding Homework sessions. It could only be once a week, but keep it consistent, kids can be easily disappointed. Talk to the director about community service hours, before you know it your class will be growing!
4) HOMELESS SHELTERS: Homeless shelters are always in need of help, and most of the time no prior rsvp is needed. Walk in, grab a smock and start serving dinner, or play with the kids, everything helps!
5) SENIOR CITIZENS: You know how old people can be! Does it kill you to see an old woman or man alone at dinner or walking in the cold? Go to the senior citizen homes and see what you can do. Maybe get a couple of friends and run a simple dance class, read for them, play instruments, sing, anything that involves making them smile!
6) DO IT YOURSELF: You have the power to start your own group! Don't be afraid to take the initiative and begin a community service in group in what interests you. Create a facebook group, or have meetings at your house with friends. Eventually if your idea is successful and thoroughly thought it will spread to others gaining you more people. How do you think all these other programs got involved ?!
7) GET INVOLVED: It is a proven fact, those who help others are much happier than those who don't! Don't be a bystander on the sidelines, get in the game and help your teammates. We are all one, we all need help, we all live together, and we all can make a difference to change this world.
A Poem, written by yours truly...
Each second, each minute, each hour, each day
We live our lives the same in every which way,
Where is the spontaneity, gone is the surprise
Has this society averted our eyes?
Do we really not hear the internal cries?
Or to simply hide or fear, do we not try.
Try to help the world we once knew, or are we too vain.
it's up to you for us up to stop and head in a new direction,
learning, guiding, and showing affection,
maybe we could change all of the above,
if only, if only, we had a little love.
**Feedback on the poem would be nice

Thank you for helping me to see that the world is larger than ourselves - if everyone did a little something, wouldn't it be a much better place?
Great thoughts readit21. thanks
Alex,
I am so impressed by your growth and compassion! I think your essay is good enough to be published in a commercial magazine. And the poem is a beautiful, compassionate version of a more adult couple of poems written by you know who. She has one that uses time similarly to you, something like "every 20 minutes, every 15 seconds . . ." and she also has one about Harlem and the lack of love and grace there. Interesting coincidence. CONGRATULATIONS on this one.
